The Sacramento Kings announced today that the team has agreed to a multi-year contract extension with Head Coach Mike Brown.
“Mike has done a tremendous job leading our team and this extension is well-deserved,” said Sacramento Kings General Manager Monte McNair. “His commitment to success is second to none, and I look forward to building on the foundation he’s helped establish in Sacramento.”
“I love being in Sacramento, and I’m excited for this next chapter,” said Sacramento Kings Head Coach Mike Brown. “I appreciate Vivek and Monte for their continued support, and I also want to thank my coaching staff and the players for their incredibly hard work and commitment to our team. I look forward to working together to accomplish our goals.”
Over his 10 seasons as a head coach, Brown has compiled a regular-season record of 441-286 (.607) and tallied 50 wins in postseason play. Among head coaches who have coached at least 500 career regular season games, Brown holds the ninth-highest winning percentage in NBA history. In two seasons with Sacramento, he has posted a 94-70 record during the regular season, good for the fourth-best regular-season win percentage in franchise history (.573). Brown’s 94 wins since the 2022-23 season ranks eighth among all head coaches in the NBA in that time.
Brown was named the unanimous 2023 NBA Coach of the Year, earning the distinction for the second time in his career and becoming the first head coach in NBA history to win the award unanimously. He is just the 11th coach to receive Coach of the Year honors multiple times during their career since the award’s inception in 1962-63. Brown picked up his 400th career regular-season victory at Golden 1 Center against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Nov. 13, 2023. He was the 54th coach in league history to reach the 400-win mark.
Brown joined the Kings on May 9, 2022, after spending six seasons as an associate head coach with Golden State from 2016-22, winning the NBA Finals three times during his tenure (2016-17, 2017-18, 2021-22). Prior to the Warriors, Brown served as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers (2005-10, 2013-14) and the Los Angeles Lakers (2011-12), leading the Cavaliers to an NBA Finals appearance in 2006-07.
Before his time in Cleveland, Brown was associate head coach of the Indiana Pacers for two seasons (2003-05) following three years as an assistant with the San Antonio Spurs (2001-03), where he also captured an NBA title. He began his career with the Denver Nuggets in 1992, spending five seasons as a video coordinator and scout before serving as an assistant under Bernie Bickerstaff in Washington starting in 1997. A native of Columbus, Ohio, Brown is a graduate of the University of San Diego, where he played collegiately for two seasons after spending two years at Mesa Community College.
