Origin Story

Togetherness in
Every Cup

The Muungano Cooperative lies over three hours south of Goma, accessible via a rugged dirt road that follows the western shores of Lake Kivu. The journey is challenging, with rocky terrain and muddy paths, but it leads to a community producing some of the most remarkable coffees in the region.

Founded in 2009, the Muungano Cooperative represents over 4,100 smallholder farmers, nearly half of whom are women. The cooperative was built on the principles of unity and gender equity, bringing together farmers from diverse backgrounds under one shared vision. The name “Muungano,” meaning “Togetherness” in Swahili, reflects this mission.

In its early years, farmers relied on outdated milling equipment, some dating back to the early 20th century. Despite these limitations, they produced coffee with vibrant and complex flavors. Over time, the cooperative has transformed significantly, now operating two modern washing stations, a cupping laboratory, and a trained team of coffee professionals.

Working in the Democratic Republic of Congo presents ongoing challenges, including limited infrastructure and difficult logistics. However, Muungano farmers remain committed to improving quality and maximizing the potential of their Bourbon coffee trees. Their dedication and willingness to learn continue to drive progress.

In 2017, Muungano achieved Organic certification, opening doors to international specialty markets. Building on this success, the cooperative introduced natural-processed coffees in 2018, which quickly gained recognition for their exceptional quality.

By 2023, Muungano expanded its production to include farmer-washed Kivu 4 coffee alongside its premium fully-washed Kivu 3. Even the Kivu 4 grade consistently scores between 83–85 points, highlighting the cooperative’s attention to detail and commitment to excellence.

Muungano’s journey is a story of resilience, innovation, and unity. It represents the dedication of a community working together to overcome challenges and produce outstanding coffee that reflects the spirit of togetherness in every cup.
